The Same

'The Same' follows the story of two women –both named Lisa– who meet and slowly realise they are in fact the same person stuck in different moments in time. Blurring the line between science fiction and psychosis, the two Lisas embark on a joint emotional journey, helping each other unravel, process and re-define the memories they once tried to bury.

Our version of the play is set in Cork, Ireland and re-interprets this story as a metaphor for the Magdalene Laundries, exploring the idea that Ireland –like the Lisas– must deal with a troubling past, it once tried to bury.

Set Designing Process:

Script Analysis

  • Progression: realism to surrealism

  • Unreliable or confused narrators

  • Warped sense of time

  • Intimate: delves into Lisas' psyche

  • Character more than narrative

Costume Designing Process:

Script Analysis

  • The Lisas are the same person: the costumes need to mirror that

  • Realistic costumes for the Lisas VS. stylised costumes for their memories

  • Intimate staging: can play with details and textures
